Since we have to source these rolls for each order, TURANO and ROSENS buns are ONLY SHIPPED ON MONDAYS (Tuesday if it’s a holiday). Orders must be in by midnight Sunday to ship that week. It’s sometimes hard to find rolls that won’t expire soon, so we have developed this shipping routine so that you will receive rolls that are useable upon receiving.
Our days catering and operating the Chicago Johnny’s Co hot dog cart brought to our attention that certain Chicago area items are not available nationwide, such as Turano French Rolls and Rosens Poppyseed Hot Dog Buns, so we started offering items on our site for shipping to all those Chicago transplants that don’t have access to such Chicago delicacies. As empathetic culinary professionals, we wanted to extend this service at Johnny & Elle’s Rustic Gourmet.
Turano French Rolls are prominent in Chicagoland for Italian beef, Italian sausage, cold cut sandwiches, and a side of garlic bread from local pizza joints. Its a gluten heavy, springy roll that holds up when steamed or dipped into Italian beef gravy and is a necessity for many of you out there to get that perfect Italian beef sandwich outside of the Chicago area.
Rosen’s Poppyseed Buns are the essential go to for hot dog joints across Chicagoland. We did not know, and still kind of find it hard to believe, that poppyseed buns are not available across the nation. We always knew they were essential to having a classic Chicago dog, but we did not know they don’t really exist outside of the area.
So these two offerings from Johnny & Elle are not actually ours, but we do want to continue offering this service to our longstanding, and new, clientelle that relies on us for this service.

Holidays are extremely pressing for Turano and Rosen’s, but especially summer holidays. Order weeks ahead and freeze them. For best results of either buns, defrost in the fridge overnight, and then steam each bun immediately before serving and they will be just like you just received them.
Pro tip: Bag sets of buns that you will use in a week, and freeze in those amounts. Double bagging will help your buns last longer before developing ice crystals or freezerburn.

This carryover service from Chicago Johnny’s Co allows us to still serve our longstanding clientelle that have been following Johnny’s and Elle’s story since about 2011. If you’re making Italian beef at home with Johnny’s Italian Beef Seasoning, Turano rolls are a nice add on to your order so that you have them when you need them.
